Differential fluid, also known as gear oil, is a lubricant used in a vehicle's differential—a component that transfers power from the engine to the wheels, allowing them to rotate at different speeds, especially during turns. Here’s a clear explanation:

What is Differential Fluid?

Purpose: Differential fluid lubricates the gears, bearings, and other components in the differential, reducing friction, preventing wear, and dissipating heat.


Composition: It’s typically a thick, high-viscosity oil (e.g., 75W-90 or 80W-140), often synthetic, designed to withstand high pressure and temperatures. It contains additives like anti-wear agents, corrosion inhibitors, and extreme-pressure compounds.

Types:

Conventional gear oil: Mineral-based, suitable for older vehicles.


Synthetic gear oil: Offers better performance under extreme conditions, longer life, and improved fuel efficiency.


Limited-slip differential (LSD) fluid: Contains additives for vehicles with limited-slip differentials to enhance clutch performance and prevent slippage.

Why is it Important?

1. Reduces Friction: Prevents metal-to-metal contact in gears, extending differential life.

2. Heat Dissipation: Absorbs and disperses heat generated by gear movement.

3. Corrosion Protection: Shields components from rust and oxidation.

4. Smooth Operation: Ensures gears and bearings operate efficiently, especially in high-torque or off-road conditions.

5. Prevents Noise and Damage: Low or degraded fluid can cause whining, grinding, or gear failure.

Where is it Used?

- Rear-wheel drive vehicles: Differential is typically in the rear axle.

- Front-wheel drive vehicles: Differentials are often integrated into the transmission (transaxle fluid may serve dual purposes).

- Four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles: Both front and rear differentials (and sometimes transfer cases) require fluid.

- Heavy-duty vehicles: Trucks, SUVs, or off-road vehicles need robust differential fluid due to higher torque and stress.

Maintenance

Checking Fluid: Most differentials have a fill plug to check fluid level and condition. Fluid should be clean, not milky (indicating water contamination) or metallic (indicating wear).


Change Interval: Typically every 30,000–60,000 miles (48,000–96,000 km) for conventional oil, or longer for synthetics (check vehicle manual). Severe conditions (towing, off-roading) require more frequent changes.

Signs of Issues:

  - Whining or grinding noises from the differential.

  - Vibration or clunking during turns.

  - Leaks around the differential housing.


Replacement: Drain old fluid via the drain plug, clean the differential, and refill with the manufacturer-specified fluid type and viscosity.

Key Considerations

Viscosity Grade: Must match the vehicle’s requirements (e.g., SAE 75W-90). Check the owner’s manual or differential housing label.


Limited-Slip Differentials: Require specific LSD-compatible fluid to avoid clutch chatter.
